Day 4: Unproductive

Today was a very unproductive day in every aspect including, but not limited to, game making. I guess not every day is perfect, just so long as this doesn’t keep up.

Good news it I got farther ahead yesterday after I wrote the blog post and actually ended up meeting all of my week’s goals early. Tomorrow and possibly even tonight I’m going to get started on character and model development. I’d like to get a few models ready within the next few weeks. I’m not really sure where I’m going to go after that honestly. I need to get core gameplay mechanics ready but I’m not exactly sure how to go about that.

One thing at a time I guess.

Oh yeah, I didn’t keep to my format. I guess that’s my productive day format.

Something I’d like to do is plan out core gameplay functions. What do I want the player to do, besides walk around? I’m going to start listing things out in a notebook and possibly upload it here to get a good sense of what I need to do in order to get started with this game.

For now, modeling!

Day 3: Actually starting design

I’d like to have some sort of layout assigned to these posts now, it’ll probably change over time but I think I’ll try something out today.

What I did today:

Today I decided to actually dive into making the game. I figured that the game is probably way too ambitious anyway so I might as well get started as early as possible.

Around noon I started programming and almost immediately started to feel very overwhelmed. How am I, one person, going to be able to learn programming, animation, texture design, game design, music creation, and everything else that goes into making a game, especially in a reasonable amount of time. Luckily, I pulled myself together (at least for now) and started working.

Today’s Accomplishments:

I did it! I made some sort of thing on Unity. It’s a cylinder that moves around using WASD, looks around using the mouse, can jump and has a sprint key. There are a few logic errors I need to work out still but it’s progress.

Goals:

By the end of the week I’d like my very basic movement and camera system to be complete and error free. After that, I’m not completely sure, I’ll probably start working on terrain or maybe modeling. I’m trying to piece this together one thing at a time. Deep breaths.

Thanks 0 readers for reading! I’ll try to update tomorrow.

Day 2: 2torials

I didn’t have a default title to work with today so I just went for a horrible title instead.

Today I spent brainstorming ideas for the future game and completing a few Unity engine tutorials. For the most part the engine feels pretty intuitive and I’m excited to get started doing actual game development soon.

Right now my goals for the week are to do some more advanced tutorials, draw up a few concepts and maybe a map, and jot down some game features I want involved. I’ve got one little sketch (courtesy of my friend) that I’ll try and look for to upload here maybe tomorrow.

Sorry to my 0 readers that this is a pretty boring update, once I actually start development it should start to get loads more interesting.

The Journey Begins

I decided to keep the default WordPress title because it’s pretty fitting. I’m not quite sure what I’m doing but I want to start this so that I have at least something to keep me motivated to keep going.

I have some background in programming so I won’t be completely in the dark for this, but who knows where this is going man, who knows. I don’t really know how to draw either, hopefully I can learn all this through this game. Or not. I don’t know.

My goal for this week is to get Unity engine and Visual Studio installed on my home computer and my laptop and get a GitHub account ready for extensive use. Before next week I want to be at least comfortable with the basics of Unity Engine (luckily I know my way around Visual Studio somewhat already, so this shouldn’t be too bad).

I’ll keep daily updates here unless I forget to, this seems fun so I might as well keep going with it.

So, to my zero readers at the moment, I’m going to go stare at a download bar for Unity engine on my laptop for the next half hour!
